The golden age of cinema is still alive there, in the smell of jasmine at night and the beautiful weather. And the light is inspiring and energizing. Even with smog, there’s something about that light that’s not harsh, but bright and smooth. It fills me with the feeling that all possibilites are available. I don’t know why. It’s different from the light in other places. The light in Philadelphia, even in the summer, is not nearly as bright. It was the light that brought everybody to L.A. to make films in the early days. We’re hours away from 2013, and I couldn’t be more relieved.

Before we dive into all our 2013 desires, goals, shenanigans, I just wanted to stop for a second and thank 2012. 2012, you’ve been one hellish bastard, but I couldn’t be any more grateful for all you’ve had to offer.

I am so so incredibly thankful for all my girlfriends. Seriously, all you foxy ladies are the shit. And I’m thankful for all the fellas who let me pretend to be a bro. And my family for dealing with my craycray.

I’m thankful for all the trips and cons I’ve taken this years (even that stormy, messy WonderCon). For the new friends and dreamers I’ve met along the way.

I’m thankful WB trusted me to take on and nail the work of two people while my colleague was on maternity leave. The exciting and fantastic projects I got to work on this year.

I’m thankful for all the laughs, adventures and even the tears. I’m thankful for the Let’s Date app. Even though I’m totally never going to get my comics back after that one date. For the stories strangers have shared with me through film, comics and music.

I’m thankful for Los Angeles. She’s shown me love like no other and accepted me in her arms even after my dalliances with other cities.

I’m thankful for every day I’ve been fortunate to live in the city that I do with the friends I have. Thank you, 2012, and goodbye.

There’s a phenomenon in advertising called Client’s Disease. Every client is in love with his own product. The mistake he makes is believing that, because he loves it, everyone else will too.

They won’t. The market doesn’t know what you’re selling and doesn’t care. Your potential customers are so busy dealing with the rest of their lives, they haven’t got a spare second to give to your product/work of art/business, no matter how worthy or how much you love it. What’s your answer to that?

1) Reduce your message to its simplest, clearest, easiest-to-understand form.

2) Make it fun. Or sexy or interesting or informative.

3) Apply that to all forms of writing or art or commerce.

When you understand that nobody wants to read your shit, your mind becomes powerfully concentrated. You begin to understand that writing/reading is, above all, a transaction. The reader donates his time and attention, which are supremely valuable commodities. In return, you the writer, must give him something worthy of his gift to you.
